About the .BANK new gTLD

.BANK is a proposed new gTLD intended for the use of companies that provide financial services worldwide. If approved, .BANK would provide a secure way for consumers and businesses to do their banking online. Both known applicants for .BANK have proposed implementing financial industry standards for security measures related to .BANK, thus ensuring a secure environment for banking online.

.BANK domains will be reserved exclusively for financial institutions with verification and eligibility requirements. This exclusivity will ensure security by preventing issues facing financial websites today including phishing and fraudulent behavior.

Proposed Security Measures for .BANK

BITS, the technology arm of the Financial Services Roundtable, has published a set of specifications for high-security new gTLDs including .BANK. The wide-ranging specifications encompasses 31 items including registration, acceptable use policies, abusive conduct, law enforcement compliance, registrar relations and data security. Specifications would also ban Whois privacy services from financial new gTLDs and require registries to verify accurate Whois records.

Measures could be voluntarily adopted by any new gTLD applicants. However, BITS wants them made mandatory for new gTLDs related to financial services, which it calls fTLDs.

Newly proposed security measures for new gTLDs associated with financial services will be updated as they are proposed.

About Domain Security Company LLC

Domain Security Company is a Wisconsin-based LLC that will establish .SECURE and .BANK. The company's goal is to make the Internet a safer and more secure place by employing a mix of technology and processes including industry standards for high security websites.

Domain Security Company will be working to ensure that .BANK domains are not compromised. This will include scanning the Internet on a regular basis to look for servers pretending to operate as a bank's website as well as looking for phishing sites by using image recognition software to determine fictitious SSL certificates.

About BITS

BITS will establish a new company that will be responsible in filing the application for .BANK new gTLD. If their application is approved, .BANK will primarily be used for secure inter-bank transactions.
