About the .FILM new gTLD

In order to secure, initiate and operate the premier cinema-related namespace for the exclusive use of pre-qualified industry members, The Film Registry has announced their intent to introduce the .film top-level domain. The .film namespace will be an exclusive home on the Internet for films and movie content.

The .film namespace will provide benefits over the .com and ccTLD alternatives by restricting registration to official owners of film titles and registered industry professionals only. The .film namespace will:

• Provide an intuitive and easy to navigate domain name system
• Preserve the legacy of film libraries in perpetuity
• Address film piracy and copyright infringement

The .film top-level domain will ensure that industry members will no longer be forced into marketing decisions such as movietitle-themovie.com when the film name could rather follow the format movietitle.film instead.

With the .film namespace established, neither will the industry nor consumers be forced to search for films such as E.T. using www.et20.com or Million Dollar Baby using milliondollarbabymovie.warnerbros.com/intro.html because more natural and authoritative Internet addresses will exist for these and other titles.

The Film Registry Inc. has been collaborating with industry-wide strategic partners since 2005 to investigate appropriate policy and management structure for the .film naming convention. As such, the .film top-level domain will provide brand protection and simplified marketing on the Internet for all theatrical releases enabling an end to user confusion. Additionally, the .film domain will allow current and future digital consumer delivery mechanisms to function easily.
