A Mythic Society in Metamorphosis
For over 2,500 years or more, Rome has been a center. First of the Roman civilization, then the Papal States, then the Kingdom of Italy, and finally the Republic of Italy. Today, it is a hub of commerce and tourism for southern Europe, with approximately 4 million people living in and around the city limits and millions of visitors every year. The .ROMA new generic top-level domain (new gTLD) will share the rich culture of Rome with the online community.
Business in Rome
The Roman economy is largely focused on services and tourism. Italian film, led by Cinecittà, is largely made in Rome, and telecommunications and high-tech businesses – led by Telecom Italia, one of the largest companies in the world – also thrive. Along with Telecom Italia, two other businesses in the global 100 are based in Rome: Eni, the oil-and-gas multinational, and Enel, the third-largest electric utility in Europe.
Education and government form two other major sectors of the economy. In addition to the Italian government and the Vatican, numerous UN and EU offices, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the UN World Food Program, are based here.
Tourism in Rome
Millenia of art and history and the presence of the Vatican make tourism one of Rome's principal businesses. In fact, Rome is the third-most-visited city in the EU, The Capitoline and Vatican Museums and the Borgese Gallery alone could encompass an artistic education, but Rome has dozens more, covering art from prehistory to the present day. Even without setting foot indoors, visitors to the Roman Forum, the Coliseum, and the numerous statues and fountains can get a substantial lesson in the history of art and architecture, not to mention the city planning and civil engineering that went into the design of the numerous plazas and the aqueducts that still stand as monuments to Roman achievement.
