About the .SCOT new gTLD


.SCOT is the proposed new generic top-level domain for the country of Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Located in the northern third of the island of Great Britain, Scotland is known for its rich cultural heritage that attracts travelers from around the globe. Popular tourist destinations include Edinburgh, the capital and financial center, and Glasgow, the country's largest city.

The .SCOT new gTLD will open the door to new opportunities for Scottish businesses by serving as a unique branding tool. In addition, Scots living around the globe can also use .SCOT to promote can to promote Scotland:

  • Spoken and visual languages of Scotland
  • Scottish social, cultural, business and academic institutions
  • Rich Scottish heritage

"Scotland is well on the road to independence, and it looks like we will soon be independent in cyberspace too," A spokesperson for Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond told The Scotsman newspaper. "The dotScot domain name will be a great boost in promoting Scotland around the globe."

Scotland joins two other locations in the United Kingdom applying for new gTLDs including .WALES and .LONDON.

In March 2012, the United Kingdom government gave the go ahead to Dot Scot Registry to apply for the .SCOT new gTLD.

Dot Scot Registry is a not-for-profit company created to apply for and operate .SCOT, which will represent an online identity for the worldwide family of Scots. The Scottish Government is backing Dot Scot Registry because it shares the belief that .SCOT should be a community-based public resource rather than a private asset.
