About the .SIC new gTLD

With the assistance of the Szekler National Council, a campaign to bring a top-level domain of .sic representing the Szeklerland region in Romania has been introduced. ICANN, the organization responsible for the supervision and allocation of domain names, has accepted .sic as an abbreviation of SICULITAS. The translation of "Siculitas" today means "Szekler people," but during the Hungarian administration of the Middle Ages the meaning was "a community with self-government and freedom of rights." With the choice of this domain name the Szekler National Council would like to express not only a regional identity but also the historical roots of Szekler freedom.

The individual Internet domain name of Szeklerland makes it possible for governments, institutions, companies and private individuals in Szeklerland to use Internet addresses utilizing the .sic extension. The Szekler National Council considers this an important step in its autonomy aspirations, a victory in the fact that Szeklerland appears as an independent entity on the Internet among other countries, autonomous regions and cultural communities. Beyond that the new domain name could be used as a symbol of unity for Szeklers around the world because they will have the opportunity to use the name for their own web destinations. Szeklerland has appeared along side other cities and countries such as Quebec, Scotland, Bretagne, Cornwall, England, Wales, Leon, Basque country and Galicia also campaigning for their own top-level domain names.

A .sic domain extension could serve multiple purposes. First, as a means to strive towards independence, the name could serve as the next step for the region in its hopes for self governance. Also, the name would allow visitors to any site with a .sic extension to become aware that all content on a particular site is connected to the Szekler culture.
